Last time in Mystic Falls: Jules and Tyler left town after the other werewolves were killed by Elijah and Stefan during their attempt at getting the moonstone and doppelganger. Uncle John Gilbert told Alaric he wanted his ring back and began sowing seeds of doubt about Ric into Jenna's mind.
Elena was still at the lake house reading Jonathon Gilbert's diaries. He described that he was sitting at dinner with the Fells (Honoria and her husband) and telling them they were all safe now from the demons whom they burned at the church. Then they heard a noise outside so the husband and Jonathon went to investigate. Jonathon said there weren't any vampires left and took out his vampire compass to prove it, but the compass started spinning and pointed somewhere. Suddenly the husband was gone and then he was thrown from the sky onto the ground dead. Honoria ran out but Jonathon told her to go back inside, but the vampire grabbed her and fed off her. Jonathon wrote that the beast turned around and it was Stefan Salvatore! Elena showed Stefan the diary, he read it and said it was true. Then in an 1847 flashback Stefan was in a decrepit mansion feeding off of many compelled girls ala present day Damon! Damon showed up and was disgusted by what he saw. This was awesome - Stefan finally playing someone evil vs Damon having to play the nice role and both very convincing. Damon actually compelled the women to leave the house and never come back. Damon also said that he was leaving town because it was too dangerous there. Present day Elena said that Stefan sounded like Damon. Stefan replied that he was worse. Elena asked how Stefan could've been so reckless with killing people back then. Stefan said it was easy because of the Civil War. Another flashback to a Civil War triage center. Stefan saw a cloaked woman looking over the bodies then followed the woman and tried to attack her. But the cloaked woman pinned Stefan to the ground and revealed herself... Lexi! Oh Lexi your time on the show was too short, we're glad you're back in the flashback. So Lexi coached Stefan and let him know that he could live differently, that he could control his cravings, urges and emotions. Once he allowed himself to feel pain he would also be able to feel love. AWW.
Meanwhile Alaric was following Jenna around when she was doing historical fieldwork with Elijah Smith. Elijah told Jenna that Mystic Falls was actually founded by witches that fled from Salem, not actually by the so-called founding families. Jenna went to get something from her car. Elijah told Alaric that both he and Jenna were safe from him and Alaric shouldn't feel jealously because Elijah didn't pursue younger women. In any case Jenna was still bothered by John Gilbert's insinuations about Alaric not being truthful about Isobel so acted passive/aggressive to Alaric. Then Alaric met up with Damon and his reporter gf Andie at the grill but said he didn't find out anymore details about the original vamp. They saw Jenna and Elijah and waved them over. Then Andie said they should all have a dinner party, which Damon probably compelled her to do - but off camera.
Earlier Damon went to see Katherine in the tomb. She was all desiccated and Damon brought her some bottled blood; which instantly revived her. He also brought her some more clothes. Finally someone did that. Really he was fishing for information. He said that John Gilbert was back. Katherine pretended like she was surprised. Then Damon said John gave him the dagger and ash to kill Elijah. Katherine begged Damon not to kill Elijah because then she would be stuck in the tomb forever because Elijah would be the only one who could let her out, if he was dead he couldn't. Damon said he got the information he needed to know - which is what he thought was that the dagger and ash would kill Elijah.
So Damon was determined to kill Elijah at the dinner party. He got the dagger ready by dipping it in the ash and hiding it by his many bottles of liqueur in the den. He would do the deed after dinner when the ladies were washing up and the men would retire to drink. John Gilbert showed up to crash the dinner party. Then Elijah showed up he first told Damon that there better not be any funny business or else he would kill everyone in the house. Damon said there wasn't so Elijah went in. They had their dinner. Elijah said that for his historical research he wanted to find out more about the settler witches in the area that were rounded up and burned. Obviously setting up more plotlines for future episodes. Then Andie told Elijah to go to the den. Damon poured him a drink and they small-talked about Damon's vast leather bound book collection. Elijah then admitted that he needed to find the witch burial ground in addition to the moonstone and doppelganger to undo the curse. Damon picked up the dagger.
Back at the lake house Elena discovered a passage in Jonathon Gilbert's diary about the dagger and the white ash tree needed to kill the originals. Stefan hadn't told her about this yet so he secretly was happy that it was the confirmed method to kill an original. But then Elena read the part about how it only would work if a human did it. If a "demon" did then that "demon" would instantly die too. Ok that's why John Gilbert gave it to Damon. Cue a panicked Stefan calling Damon to tell him not to kill Elijah. But Damon didn't pick up. So Stefan called Alaric.
Alaric and Andie interrupted Damon and Elijah and told them it was now time for dessert. Andie escorted Elijah out. Damon eyebrow-acted pissed and perplexed to Alaric. Alaric wrote on a piece of paper - smart so Elijah wouldn't hear - that Damon would die if he killed Elijah. Back at the dinner table Damon, Andie and Elijah were sitting down but no dessert yet. Andie wanted to interview him so went to find her notebook. Damon told Elijah that John Gilbert wasn't on Elena's list of protected people so Elijah could kill him. Elijah said that he would take Elena away from her home if he felt it necessary. Suddenly Elijah turned all grey, veiny and dead. Alaric had thrust the dagger through his back to his heart. That was AWESOME! Alaric put the dagger on the table and said he saw an opening to do the deed so just did it but was pissed at Damon for making the plan and not informing him. He told Damon that he was his only friend so Damon shouldn't lie to him any more. They dragged Elijah's body to the basement cell.
Back at the lake house Elena was also pissed at Stefan for not telling him about the plan to kill Elijah. Then Stefan told Elena that she was the person who was giving up. That Stefan was at that point too when he first turned, but Lexi was the one who gave him hope, who told him to fight. Then Elena read the diary passage that said that as long as the dagger was kept in the original's body the original vampire would stay dead. Whoops. Cue Stefan again panicked on the phone. Cue Damon looking in the basement but Elijah was gone. Cue a totally p.o'd Elijah meeting with Jonas and telling him they needed to get Elena N.O.W.
Elijah showed up at the lake house but Elena told him that she wouldn't invite him in. He said that he was patient and would wait as long as it took. So Elena said that she would only come out if Elijah agreed to the same terms as before - as long as she worked with him, all her friends and loved ones would be safe. Elijah said - no, that the trust was gone. So Elena said that she would stab herself with the sharp knife she had in her hand, Stefan would feed her his blood, she would kill herself and turn into a vampire just like Katherine if Elijah didn't agree. Elijah said she was bluffing and it looked like it, but then suddenly she stabbed the dagger into her stomach. Argh Elena! Blood poured from her stomach. She was in agony and dropped to her knees. A panicked Elijah said fine, he agreed to the original terms. Elena went outside. Elijah embraced her in a dad hug. But then Elena stabbed him with the dagger and this time the dude was dead. That was awesome! Stefan ran to Elena and fed her his blood to heal her wound. Damon stepped out of the shadows.
They dumped Elijah's body for the second time into the basement cell. Why didn't they chop up the body and burn it? For some reason methinks that Elijah will return but at some later date. Really all someone needs to do it pull out the dagger and he's back alive. Damon found the moonstone in Elijah's jacket pocket. Elena told them that they couldn't lie to her anymore and that she would fight.
Sometime during the episode Luka confronted Bonnie about what she did to him last time. Bonnie feigned that anything happened. Bonnie and Jeremy did some witchy woodo at his house when Jonas showed up. He was pissed. Bonnie said she knew about his daughter being with Klaus and they should work together to get her back. But Jonas didn't buy it and took away Bonnie's powers.
Alaric tried to talk to Jenna back at chez Gilbert after the dinner party where everyone disappeared. Jenna asked about Isobel and Alaric couldn't tell her anything. So pissed she went upstairs and then John Gilbert appeared. He told Ric that he would tell Jenna all about Isobel unless he got the ring back. Alaric took it off and left it on the counter. He told John that he needed it more now than Ric did.
Damon went home and heard someone showering in his bathroom. It turned out to be Katherine! Once Elijah was dead then his compulsion didn't work on her anymore.
Next episode: "The House Guest" Katherine gets everyone confused about who the real Elena is.
